Roy Jack Hipps, 73, of 19-A Heather Way, Candler, died Tuesday, June 4, 2002, in St. Joseph’s hospital. Mr. Hipps was born in Buncombe County and was a son of Hazel Galloway Hipps of Fairview and the late Roy M. Hipps. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Brenda C. Hipps. He was one of the co-founders of Calabash West Restaurant and was also owner of Hipps Restaurant Equipment Company. Mr. Hipps was a member of Oak Hill United Methodist Church where he had served as chairman of the Administrative Council and president of the United Methodist Men. He was vice-chairman of the Brigadoon Owners Association. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Rachel McCulloch Hipps; two daughters, Patrice H. Rippy and her husband Harry of Atlantic Beach and Pamela Adams and her husband Joe of Asheville; three sons, Michael D. Hipps and his wife Linda of Asheville, Mark D. Hipps of Durham, and Jack M. Hipps and his wife Jane of Candler; eight grandchildren, Connie H. Hill, Dennis Hipps, Brandon Rippy, Brian Rippy, Barry Rippy, Brooke Adams, Rachel Hipps and Adam Hipps; one great-granddaughter, Katie Rippy; and two sisters, Barbara Davis and her husband John M. of Richmond, VA, and Evelyn Bagley and her husband Don of Boca Raton, FL. Funeral services will be at 11:00 am Friday at Oak Hill United Methodist Church with the Revs. Kim Higgins, Norman Hubbard and Wesley Sharpe officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Barry Rippy, Brian Rippy, Brandon Rippy, Brian McCulloch, Dennis Hipps and Adam Hill. His family will receive friends from 6 - 7:30 pm Thursday at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue and request that memorials be made to Oak Hill United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, Oak Hill Road, Candler, NC 28715.
