Sidney Vance Rodgers, 81, of 103 Appalachian Blvd., Arden, died Sunday, April 13, 2005, at Heather Glen Assisted Living Community after a long battle with kidney disease. The family wishes to thank Heather Glen at Ardenwoods for the loving care that Mr. Rodgers received while a resident.
Mr. Rodgers was born in Fitzgerald, GA, and was the son of the late Sidney V. Rodgers, Sr. and Lula G. Rodgers. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 57 years, Ethel I. Rodgers, who died in November, 2004, and by two brothers, Raymond J. Rodgers and Lewis J. Rodgers.
Mr. Rodgers graduated from Sand Hill High School and was a lifelong member of Dix Creek United Methodist Church and was active in the United Methodist Men of the church. He retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1974 after 28 years serving his country. He served in three wars, WW II, Korea and Vietnam. He was an avid sports fan of Carolina basketball and enjoyed all sports, especially golf.
Surviving are his daughter, Vicki Castaldo and her husband Mark of Fairfax, VA; a son, Mark Rodgers and his wife Marilyn of Weaverville; two grandsons, Gary Phelps and his wife Holly, and Nathaniel Rodgers; and two brothers Carl V. Rodgers of Hendersonville and Paul G. Rodgers of Hagerstown, MD.
A memorial service will be held at 6:00 p.m. Saturday at Dix Creek United Methodist Church with the Revs. Kent Smith and Joseph Dillon officiating.
The family will receive friends at the church from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. prior to the service.

Dear Vicki,
We are deeply saddened by your loss. Your father gave his country the best years of his life and you should be proud of him. I am glad that he got to see UNC win the National Title one more time. Please offer our condolences to your brother and his family as well Mark and Gary.

I am so sorry that I abandoned you at the end of your life. I guess I didn’t want to see you die. You meant so much to me and I will never forget you. Hope you knew how much I loved you and love you still…
