Taylor Marie Ramey

taylor ramey
Taylor Marie Ramey 17, 32 Tipperary Drive, Asheville, NC, died at home on May 3, 2010. An Asheville Native, Taylor was the daughter of Gary G. and Sonya L. Ramey. Taylor looked forward to joining her twin, Brittney Lee Ramey who died April 10, 2009; and their maternal grandmother Clara Ann Retter who died in 1996. Taylor loved all animals, with a special connection to horses and greatly enjoyed riding and visiting Tonka, her favorite horse at Mountin' Hopes Therapeutic Riding Center in Mars Hill NC. An adventurous young lady, Taylor thoroughly enjoyed canoeing with alligators and swimming with dolphins in Florida as well as visiting sharks and horseback riding in Hawaii. Her most exciting memory was the Kentucky Derby in 2008. She and her family, through the generosity of the Make A Wish Foundation, got personal tours of Churchill Downs and box seats for the Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby. Taylor was fortunate enough to hand feed several Derby Horses, meet many jockeys, trainers and a few owners during that wonderful week before the race. A half-hour conversation about horses with Streetsense Jockey Calvin Borel and trainer Carl Nofziger was the highlight of her Derby trip. She was very excited for Calvin when he went on to win the Kentucky Derby two more times, becoming the only rider to win three times within a four year period. Taylor was a student at Clyde A. Erwin High School. The schools and the community at large continued to support Taylor as she struggled against the Myclonic Epilepsy with Ragged Red Fibers (MERRF) that eventually took her young but full life. Her never give up attitude is an inspiration to many. In addition to her parents, Taylor is survived by grandparents Jane Bak, of Asheville, and Norman and Andrea Retter, of Port Charlotte. FL; aunt, Mary Kah and husband Steven, of Grayslake IL; uncles, Norman Retter, Jr., and wife Judy, of Blissfield MI, and Paul Bak, of Asheville. A memorial service for Taylor will be held at 3:30 PM on Monday, May 10, 2010 in the Theater at Clyde A. Erwin High School with the Rev. Dr. Buddy Corbin CarePartners Hospice Chaplain, officiating. Memorials may be made to CarePartners Hospice or Mountin' Hopes Therapeutic Riding Center, PO Box 387, Mars Hill, NC 28754. Groce Funeral Home on Patton Ave. is assisting the family.

  1. i pray for the ramey family and friends during this hard time. taylor was a wonderful girl and a joy to be around. she had been in my class and always made me laugh. she was a very smart girl and always had a smile on her face. i know that now taylor is in heaven with brittney and they will be having lots of fun and riding horses with jesus. taylor and brittney are in a better place now and will always be loved by every one who meet them!

  2. My heart goes out to you all. It seems so unfair that death should have the power to take away someone you love. Although there is nothing that can eliminate all of your pain, never underestimate the power of prayer. The Bible exhorts us to “Throw your burden upon Jehovah himself, and he himself will sustain you.” (Psalm 55:22) Please know that I will be praying that Jehovah God bring you the comfort you need to sustain you during this much difficult time.

  3. I am very sorry to hear of Taylor’s death although I knew it was eminent.
Please know you will be in my thoughts and prayers.
    Your neighbor,
    Mary Austin

  4. We loved Taylor so much and feel so blessed to have shared her and Brittany’s sweet lives. Our deepest sympathy and prayers are with you all during this difficult time.
    Love, Evelyn & Drew

  5. Sonya,

I cannot even begin to tell you have sorry I am for your loss. I pray that the next chapter in your life is filled with love and happiness overflowing. I know there is comfort in knowing that both your babies are in heaven where there will be no more pain. They are in eternal paradise, laughing, singing, playing, loving, caring and all the ‘ing’ things they were both known for. Laura was right today when she said how blessed the girls were to have such good parents. Children learn from what they are taught and it was obvious they were taught to love and to be courageous even when they didn’t feel like it. Think upon the good times and keep those sweet memories locked in your heart until you see them again. What a glorious day that will be. Love to you and your family.

  6. Gary and Sonya, Our hearts are deeply sadden by the loss of Taylor. I have fond memories of having Taylor in my second grade classroom at West Buncombe Elementary. Her love of animals was evident way back then. She would read every book about horses that she could get her hands on! I remember all the Friday nights when Britney and Taylor would help me set up my classroom! What sweet girls! We are so very sorry. We can’t begin to imagine your pain. Know that you all are in our thoughts and prayer. We are asking Jesus to hold you especially close.
    In Christ,
    Dave & Donna (Ross) Dupree

  7. Gary I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your beautiful daughters. I know you loved them so much. We are remembering you in prayer.

    Joyce Bates
