Theodore Virgil Faber

Theodore “Ted” V. Faber, beloved educator, community volunteer, and friend, passed away peacefully September 11th at the age of 81.

Ted dedicated much of his life to education, serving as the Assistant Principal of Southside High School in Elmira, New York, along with other teaching and administrative roles in the Elmira City School District. During his long career he inspired countless students and colleagues with his steadfast leadership, kindness, and commitment to learning. As their coach, he led the Green Hornets basketball team to successful seasons and appearances in Section IV championship tournaments. He was known for his warm smile, steady presence in the halls, and his belief in every student’s potential to succeed.

Outside of his work in education, Ted generously gave his time and talents to the community. He was an active member of Habitat for Humanity, helping to build homes and hope for families in need for over twenty-five years, and was awarded and recognized for his consistent and impactful volunteer work. He also found joy in nurturing beauty in the world as part of the Men’s Garden Club of Asheville, where he cultivated not just flowers and plants, but lifelong friendships serving as President of the Club and was recognized by the naming of several Greenhouses in his honor.

Ted was also an avid traveler and adventurer. He delighted in exploring the breadth of the United States- including memorable tours of the National Parks- and the culture and history of Europe. Closer to his home in the mountains of North Carolina, he found peace and joy in hiking with friends, especially along the scenic trails of the Blue Ridge Parkway or trails within the Pisgah National Forest, where he felt most connected to nature.

Those who knew Ted also remember his deep affection for his miniature schnauzers- Hilde, Sophie and Chloe- who brought him great comfort, companionship, and joy throughout his life. Ted will be remembered for his dedication to service, his love for the outdoors, and his quiet humor that could light up a room. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched through education, volunteerism, and community spirit.

He is survived by his wife Donna, three children, Theodore Faber Jr. (Brenda Podemski), Jack Faber (Kimberly Raub), and Bethany Emory (Scott Emory); two grandchildren, Tyler Emory (Samara Winters) and Cody Emory (Dayanne Emory); and two great grandchildren, Jehovanni Reynoso and Leonardo Emory, along with a wide circle of friends, colleagues, and former students who will carry his memory forward. He is also survived by his brother, Anthony Faber (Margaret Faber), niece Sharon Lee Faber, and nephew Mark Faber. He was predeceased by his parents Fred and Anne Faber and his brother, John Faber.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity in his honor.

I remember when a couple friends and I stayed after school for extra help from him. We all did well on our next test. He was more excited about it than we were! A kind man. May he rest in peace.
