Born in: Asheville, NC
Resided in: Fletcher, NC

Mr. Thomas Grant Cole, 76, died in Asheville on December 26th, 2023. He was born at Biltmore Hospital in Asheville, NC on January 12th,1947, to parents Thomas “TC” Cole and Jean Grahl Cole. Tom was raised in Asheville, graduating from Lee Edwards High School in 1965, and Mars Hill College in 1969.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years Carolyn Cole of Fletcher, sons Ted Cole of Fletcher and Travis Cole of Citrus Heights, California, his mother Jean Cole of Asheville, brother Ron Cole of Asheville, and granddaughter Fraya Cole of Asheville.

Tom loved, studied, and taught history his whole life. A 31- year educator in Asheville City Schools and Henderson County Public Schools, Tom poured his working life into the teaching of middle school and junior high history, English, and social studies, inspiring students with not only his illustrative stories but with an observant personal approach to each student. At Rugby Middle School, he chaperoned the annual mountains to the sea eighth grade bus trip to the North Carolina historical coast.

He was also an avid historical aviation photographer, having dozens of articles and photos published in the Experimental Aircraft Association’s “Warbirds” magazine. In this pursuit, Tom volunteered his personal time traveling across the country to many historical airshows, veterans reunions, and air museums in order to document the rare aircraft that helped the United States win the skies in World War II. He collected the signatures of hundreds of ace fighter pilots who served in the second world war. He also pursued World War II era historical reenacting with his longtime friend, Ken Dawson of Winston Salem, NC.

Tom was a loving son to his mother, visiting her and taking care of her even while he required his own care. Tom was a dedicated husband to his wife, and a caring and loving father to his two boys. Tom was a great dad. He always tried to do what was right and honest and showed love readily. He was full of smiles, antics, eccentricity, and fun facts.

Tom loved to sing. He was a powerful and melodic tenor who sang with the local cover band the Jesters in the late 60s. He sang in every church choir in every church he attended as well as the Fletcher Community Choir.

Tom loved to be helpful through service to other people. After retiring from the school system, he got a job at the Givens Estates as the senior activities coordinator and bus driver, working with senior residences to do fun and enriching activities. Recognized by many of his former students at many places he went in his senior years, he also pursued an active volunteer and social life through the MRLEC group for seniors at Mills River United Methodist. Tom was beloved by many members of our community.

The family will receive visitors on Monday, January 1, 2024 at 6PM until 7PM at Mills River United Methodist Church. The service in celebration of Tom’s life will be held at Mills River United Methodist Church on January 2, 2024, at 2 PM with Pastor Gerald Davis officiating.

Tom’s ashes will be privately interred at Riverside Cemetery in Asheville, North Carolina alongside family at a later date. The family requests all memorials and donations be sent to Mills River Life Enrichment Center at Mills River United Methodist Church at 137 Old Turnpike Road, Mills River, NC 28759.

  2. I was honored to have been a student of Mr Cole. What an awesome Man and Teacher he was. I am so sorry to hear of his passing may God bless each and everyone at this time.

  3. Tommy and I sang in the chorus together at Lee Edwards and I was happy to see him again at the monthly breakfast and reunions. Carolyn, I am so very sorry for your loss. I am lifting you and your family up in prayer.

  4. I am just heartsick to learn of Tom’s passing. He was one of my dearest friends from the third grade at Aycock School until the present. I saw him last at Richard Truett’s memorial service on September 23rd. We sang together in chorus at Lee Edwards, but were buddies from third grade on. My prayers are with Carolyn, his boys, and his mother. May God grant all of you an extra measure of peace and strength in the hard days ahead.

  5. The passing of Tom saddens many people who loved & adored him! He mentored & trained me at Givens Estates to step into his position driving the Residents. I offer my deepest heartfelt condolences during this extremely difficult time to your loving family!!💕

  6. Tommy and I were friends from Aycock Elementary School. This was sad for me to hear. We talked at the summer picnic each year that we were both able to go. I will miss him as I am sure you will too.

  7. Carolyn and family. Cathy and I are sorry to hear of Tommy passing. Tommy and I were in school together and we worshiped together at Grace Baptist in years past. Cathy taught with him at Hall Fletcher. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family.

  8. I have known Tommy since my sophomore year at Mars Hill College (1966) and he has been a great friend for more than 50 years! We have spent many great times together over the years and I will miss him greatly! We went on many photographic trips together and I have many photos of him and I will always cherish those memories! May GOD Bless Carolyn, Ted, Travis, Ron, Jean, and Fraya in the difficult days to come!

  12. Dale and I want to send our prayers and love to Carolyn and family. We both knew Tom working with him at Flat Rock Middle School . He was a dedicated and caring man who made an impression on us in our young careers in the 80s. May his family have peace and sweet memories!

  13. Mr. Cole was my home room and social studies teacher at David Millard Jr High in 1971-72 the last year before the school was torn down. I missed a day of school late that fall and that afternoon Mr Cole call our home to check on me. He brought the homework assignment for the day to our house and didn’t leave until he was sure I understood how to do it!
I still remember his Oldsmobile Cutlass 442. Just about the coolest car you could drive in 1971 for one of the coolest teachers I ever had.

  14. My deepest sympathy to the Cole family after hearing of Tommy’s passing. Even though I have not seen Tommy in many years, I would hear about the family since his mother Jean is my mother’s first cousin. May he rest in peace.

  15. We are so sorry to hear of Tom’s passing. We will always remember his kindness and love for his family and the Lord. He was Steve’s favorite teacher at David Millard. We are blessed to have him in our lives. Sending prayers to Ron, Jean, Carolyn and the boys. Tom is certainly in Heaven looking over you all!
