Father Victor Virgil McGuire, Jr., 76, of 253 Shelburne Road, Asheville, died Friday, January 30, 2004, at his home. A native of Taylorsville, VA, he was a son of the late Victor V. McGuire, Sr. and Blanche Duke McGuire and was also preceded in death by his wife, Anne Shuford McGuire, who died in 1999. Father McGuire attended Buncombe County Schools and Asheville City Schools and was a graduate of Lee H. Edwards High School. He attended the Citadel for two years before joining the Navy during WWII. Following the end of the war, he attended and graduated from Duke University in 1950. He was a businessman for ten years before attending Seminary at the University of the South, Suwanee, TN where he graduated in 1963. Father McGuire was ordained as an Episcopal priest and served as chaplain at Western Carolina University and pastor of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Sylva and St. Francis Episcopal Church in Cherokee. He transfered to Asheville where he pastored at St. George’s Episcopal Church then to St. Andrews in Canton where he retired. He returned to Asheville and served as volunteer chaplain at Deerfield Episcopal Retirement Community. He was a member of the Elks Club and the Rotary Club. Father McGuire is survived by his daughter, Martha McGuire Hicks and her husband Wayne of Asheville and a sister, Blanche Coppedge of Asheville. Funeral services will be 11:00 am Monday at St. George’s Episcopal Church with the Rt. Rev. Robert Johnson and the Revs. Harry A.K. Woggon, Gary Farmer and Timothy McRee officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Episcopal Churchyard in Fletcher. His family will receive friends in the Parish Hall one hour prior to the service. Memorials may be made to St. George’s Episcopal Church, 1 School Road, Asheville, NC 28806.

  3. Father McQuire was the first occupant of the rectory built at St. David’s in Cullowhee in 1963. The church had been re-consecrated in 1959. He christened our son in 1965.
