Asheville, NC ~ Warren Herbert Karstedt, 91, died on February 15, 2008 after a long illness at Deerfield Retirement Community, Asheville, NC. A native of Wisconsin, he grew up in the small Lutheran community of Burnett and graduated from Ripon College in 1938. He had a MS degree in mathematics from Purdue University. He was a Colonel in the US Army with over 30 years service. His military assignments included 2 1/2 years in N.Mrica and Italy during WWII, 18 months in Korea and 4 yrs on the Army General Staffin Washington, DC. He received various service awards including the Bronze Star, Army Commendation Medal, and the Legion of Merit. His final assignment was a permanent Associate Professorship in the Dept of Mathematics at the USMA, West Point, NY from 1959 to 1971. He and his wife were active in various Post Chapel and churches on his military tours in the United States and he served a term as chairman of the finance committee of the Post Chapel at West Point. After retiring from the Army, he became Chairman of the Mathematics & Computer Science Dept at Coastal Carolina College of the U. of South Carolina at Myrtle Beach, SC. In 1983 and he and his wife moved to Asheville to be near their daughter and many retired military friends. He taught a computer course at UNCA for a short time. He was a member of the Episcopal Church and a former member of the Downtown Club of Asheville, the Civitans, the Biltmore Forest Country Club, the Regular Retired Officers Association, and the West Point Society. He was a charter member of the Colleges for Seniors at UNCA and a life-time member of Blue Ridge Community College and Opportunity House. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Anne West Karstedt of Asheville, their daughter, Margaret Marshall Karstedt Tessier, and granddaughter, Anne Michelle Tessier of Arden and two nephews, William and John Bradshaw of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He and his wife moved to Deerfield Retirement Community in 2002. A family service will be held at the memorial garden at St. Giles. Memorials may be made to Carepartners Hospice Foundation, P.O. Box 25338, Asheville, NC 28813 or to the Resident's Retirement Fund of the Deerfield Retirement Community, 1617 Hendersonville Road, Asheville, NC 28803. Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian on Long Shoals Road is in charge of arrangements.
