Asheville ~ William G. ''Bill'' Greene, 84, of Ambler Road, died Saturday, October 27, 2001 at the VA Hospital in Asheville following an extended illness.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Helen DeBruhl Greene of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Drs. Diane G. and Webb M. Smathers, Jr. of Seneca, SC and one granddaughter, Tiffany Diane Smathers, also of Seneca.

A lifelong resident of Buncombe County, he was the son of the late Nora Kate West Greene and Parley Preston Greene. The youngest of seven children, he was preceded in death by three sisters and three brothers, Grace Adams of Naples, Florida, Jesse Bradford and Mabel Randall of Asheville, Elmore Greene of Norfolk, Virginia, Ralph Greene and Preston Greene of Asheville.

Mr. Greene retired from Hajoca Plumbing Company in 1981. Prior to working for Hajoca, he was employed by Parnell-Martin Supply Company. An active member of the community, he was a 54 year Mason and the oldest Past Master of Biltmore Masonic Lodge #446. He was also Past Grand Counselor of the United COmmercial Travelers of North Carolina. He and Mrs. Greene were 53 year members of Biltmore Chapter #38, Order of the Eastern Star, where he was a Past Patron. He was a member of Biltmore United Methodist Church where he had served in numerous roles.

During World War II, Mr. Greene served his country as a parachute rigger in the US Army Air Forces. He was assigned to the 394th Base Headquarters at Fort Bragg and was stationed in Australia, New Guinea and the Philippines.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday at Biltmore United Methodist Church with the Reverend Ashley Crowder-Stanley officiating. Interment will follow in New Salem Cemetery.

Members of Biltmore Masonic Lodge #446 will serve as pallbearers and will provide Masonic graveside rites with the lodge opening at 1:00 PM.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 8:30 PM Monday at Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian on Long Shoals Road.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Building Fund of Biltmore Masonic Lodge, PO Box 5457, Asheville, NC 28813 or to the Building Fund of Biltmore United Methodist Church, 376 Hendersonville Road, Asheville, NC 28803.
