William Clarence “Bill” Whitaker, 81, of 44 Onteora Blvd., Asheville, died unexpectedly on Thursday, July 10, 2003. A native of Buncombe County, he was a son of the late Morris D. and Anna Mae Fair Whitaker and was also preceded in death by an infant son, William Whitaker, Jr.; a sister, Louise Blankenship and a brother, Robert Whitaker. He was an Army veteran of WWII serving in the European Theater where he received a Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He was retired from Paving Enterprises. Mr. Whitaker is survived by his wife of 53 years, Dorothy Sentz Whitaker; a daughter, Debbie Rowland of Asheville; a son, Roy Whitaker of Candler; a brother, Charles Whitaker of Asheville and five grandchildren. The Buncombe County Veterans Council Memorial Team will provide military graveside services at 11:00 am Monday at Woodlawn Cemetery with the Reverend Lester Crayton officiating. The family will receive friends from 7:00-8:30 pm Sunday at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue.
