William Henry Banks, Jr., 68, formerly of Ivanhoe Avenue, Asheville, died Monday, October 7, 2002, in a Newport Beach, CA hospital.
A native of Buncombe County, he was a son of the late William Henry and Jane Bailey Banks, Sr. He was a Navy veteran of the Korean Conflict and was retired from the US Department of Agriculture after serving 27 years as a cartographic technician. He had lived in Asheville until transferring to Salt Lake City and after his retirement he returned to Asheville where he lived until moving to California in 1995.
He was a dedicated and loving father and is survived by a daughter, Melissa McLaughlin, two sons, Jeffrey Banks and Charles Banks, nine grandchildren, and his former wife, Barbara Hemingway, all of Southern California.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM Saturday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. James H. Johnson officiating assisted by Mr. Banks’ son, Charles. Burial will be at Pisgah View Memorial Park.
His family will receive friends from 7 - 8:30 PM Friday at the funeral home.

I was a classmate of Bill’s at Lee Edwards and I thought a lot of him. I was sorry to read of his passing.
I will miss Bill. He was a good friend.
