William Howard Anthony died August 24, 2014 at the age of 91. Born in Boulder, CO, the only child of Howard and Frances Anthony, he lived with his parents in Anderson, SC and Pasadena, CA. He enlisted in the army during World War II and was with the 14th Armored Division. He longed to be a journalist and was editor of his junior college paper, "The Chronicle", and on the editorial board of the "Stanford Daily". He received a BA and MA in communications from Stanford University and a PhD in political science from George Washington University. He married Elizabeth Harden in the Stanford Chapel and they had two children, Vance Howard Anthony of Arlington, VA, and Charing Anthony Pellisero of San Luis Obispo, CA. Both children and his wife, Betty, survive him. After working as a journalist on newspapers, in international radio, and television news, he joined the U.S. Information Agency. Bill's assignments over 25 years included Iran, Israel, Afghanistan, Turkey, Vietnam, and Canada. Bill and Betty retired to Black Mountain where he practiced organic gardening, reported on local politics for the Black Mountain News, was president of Kiwanis, and taught as an adjunct professor of world history and international relations at Montreat-Anderson College and UNCA. He was also an elder of the Warren Wilson Church. Moving to Crowfields, Bill enjoyed playing tennis with the "Retired Raqueteers" and actively participated in the Civitan Service Club's scholarship program. His last residence was the Deerfield Retirement Community where he served on residents committees and was one of the early members of the Croquet Club. At Bill's request there will be no memorial service. His ashes will be interred on the grounds of St. Giles Chapel at Deerfield. There will be a gathering of friends at the Deerfield Riverwalk Café at 4:30pm on Saturday, August 30, 2014. Donations in his memory can be made to the Botanical Garden at Asheville, 151 W.T. Weaver Blvd., Asheville, NC 28804, or the Deerfield Resident's Fund, 1617 Hendersonville, Rd., Asheville, NC 28803.
