William Hoyt Wilkie, Sr., 88, of Asheville, died Wednesday, August 27, 2008, at the Asheville VA Medical Center.
Born November 23, 1919, in Polk County, he was a son of the late William Pinkney Wilkie and Mae Tanner Wilkie. Mr. Wilkie was also preceded in death by a brother, L.B. Wilkie and wife Geraldine and by his wife of 64 years, Juanita Davidson Wilkie, who died April 19, 2005. They lived a true love story, having met and fallen in love when he was 6 and she was 2. They never dated anyone else and were married 15 years after their meeting.
Mr. Wilkie was an Army veteran of WW II and was a member of Oxford Masonic Lodge #22 and of New Hope United Methodist Church in Green Creek, NC. He was a master machinist and retired in 1996 after owning his own business. A kind and generous gentleman who loved the Lord and lived by His word, he helped family and strangers alike and truly performed "random acts of kindness".
He is survived by a large family who will sadly miss his humor, wisdom and compassion. They include his four children, Judith W. Lancaster and husband, Bernard, Janice W. Trantham and husband, Victor, Joy W. Voigt and husband, Thomas, and William Hoyt Wilkie, Jr. (Bill) and wife, Laurie, all of Asheville; thirteen grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren in whom he delighted; brothers, Howard Wilkie and wife Betty of Brevard, Harvey Wilkie and wife Reba of Greenville, SC, along with nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at New Hope United Methodist Church in Green Creek, NC, with the Rev. Butch Osborne officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue and again one hour prior to the service at the church.
Flowers are appreciated or donations may be made to Memory Care, 100 Far Horizons Lane, Asheville, NC 28803 or Mountain Care, 68 Sweeten Creek Road, Asheville, NC 28803.
The family wishes to thank the capable and kind staff at the VA Hospital and also Tony Case who was Mr. Wilkie's friend and caregiver for several years.

To family and friends – My prayers and thoughts are with you at this time. My deceased husband, Grover Lee Rhodes, and I were friends of Hoyt for many years. We went to 2 support groups when Juanita and Hoyt were able and enjoyed their company. Blessings and peace, Betty Nelon Rhodes
To Family and friends of Hoyt,
Hoyt and I worked together while he was at CTS years ago. I valued his friendship and the honesty in the way he lived his life. He was a credit to his family and held his head up in all his dealings. He will be missed as they do not make them like him any more. My condolences to the extended family.
Judy & family, Judy and I are very sorry to hear of your father’s passing. May the God of all comfort hold you real close during these days. We will be praying for you and your family. Dale & Judy Robinson
