William Thomas Kirkman, 87, of Asheville, died Tuesday, June 6, 2000 in a local nursing facility.
A native of Buncombe County, he was the son of the late Frederick Edward and Anne Cooper Kirkman.
He was also preceded in death by his sister, Ruth Kirkman Baylor. He was a 1931 graduate of Biltmore College. He was a US Army veteran of WW II and was stationed at the Air Corps Regional Hospital, Coral Gables and Miami Beach, FL. He was a 50 year member of the Carolina Mountain
Club, a Friends of the Library Board Member, a retired employee with Dave Steel and a member of Central United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his nieces, Anne B. Dowis, Ellen B. Vaughn; nephews, Robert K. Baylor, William T. Baylor and Fredrick E. Baylor and six
great-neices and nephews.
Memorial services will be 5:00 p.m. Saturday in the Patton Avenue Chapel of Groce Funeral Home, with the Reverend Christy Harley officiating.
His family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers memorial may be made to Central United Methodist Church, 27 Church St., Asheville, NC 28801.
Bill was a graet friend even though we had seen each other only once since 1945. He was a wonderful correspondent.
Bill was a wonderful uncle. We will miss him tremendously. He was also hiker, a musician, a photographer, a family historian, and a good cook.
