Don’t Fall Victim to the Latest Funeral Home Scam!
Like the vehicle extended-warranty scam, this one is not going away fast enough. For more than a month now, the National Funeral Directors Association (NDFA) has been warning its members about a scam targeting families recently served by funeral homes.
According to several NDFA members, scammers are using recently published obituaries to pose as a member of the funeral home staff. They will call families and tell them they owe additional funds for the service. Some scammers even demand a “security deposit” of $1,500 or more for their preneed account, threatening that without immediate payment, the service cannot be guaranteed.
Variations of this scam have emerged, with scammers claiming payment problems and sending fake representatives to collect money or manipulating families into making urgent payments through platforms like Zelle. These bottom-of-the-barrel scammers are preying on vulnerable families during their time of grief.
