Billy, a big-hearted friend and college leader

During my six years in Norfolk, I always looked forward to sharing a monthly lunch with Billy. Though I was at Old Dominion U. and he was at Wesleyan, it was as if we shared the same campus. He was a big-hearted, down-to-earth man with a wonderful laugh. I never knew a college president who was so humble yet filled with wisdom (who cooked burgers and hot dogs right outside his office for all who entered). "Mr. Virginia Wesleyan" will be dearly missed. May his spirit live with us all, most especially with his family.

I have wonderful memories of Billy Greer, especially his Georgia accent and his affability. I have always felt particular close to him because he knew my grandmother, Nell Britt Tabor. She was his voice teacher when he was growing up in Tifton. I am so sad that I will not see Billy again as I was looking forward to keeping up with the connection. I'm glad he was able to spend his last days down in North Carolina with his family.

What a gentleman and forceful leader. I was lucky to have known him. Kindness, intellect, and compassion were his watchwords. What will we do without such men to guide us? Thank you, Billie, and dear President.
