Herman Henry Messer, 90, of 7 Parkview Drive, Candler, died Thursday, September 10, 2009.
Mr. Messer was born in Delta, Alabama and was a son of the late James Henry and Martha Ginn Messer. He was also preceded in death by brothers, O.B., Elmer, A.G., Clarence, D.C., Erdele, and Melvin Messer and sister, Addie Mae Johnson.
He served in the South Pacific with the US Army during WW II and was a retired division manager for Sears. He was an active member of Acton United Methodist Church for 64 years, where he served on the Administrative Board and was a Sunday school teacher, youth leader, Trustee, and member of the United Methodist Men. He also served on the Residents' Board at Pisgah Estates Condominium Association.
Mr. Messer was an avid cook, trout fisherman and gardener.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Lillian Messer; one daughter, Linda Messer Clements and her husband, Bob, of Dacula, GA; two grandchildren, Bradford Clements and Kelly Clements Snow and her husband Joshua, of Lawrenceville, GA; and one sister Annie Rae Miller of Lineville, AL.
Funeral services will be at 3:00 p.m. Sunday at Acton United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jeane S. Walker officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the church following the service.

I remember visiting as a child with my mother and father Charles and Mildred Messer. Great memories!

I am deeply saddened to hear of Uncle Herman’s passing. He left me with some wonderful childhood memories that I will always treasure… a true southern gentleman. He was so proud of all of you. I know that today there’s a sweet reunion in Heaven!

Uncle Herman was, as Janet said, a true Southern gentleman. Next to Daddy, he was the sweetest, most gentle, loving man I ever knew. He was always a pleasure to be around. What a wonderful impression he made on many, many people throughout his long life! I feel very blessed to have had him as an uncle.
Herman was a shining example of a strong but gentle man. He always welcomed me into his home with a smile. We are very sorry for your loss and know you are in our thoughts and prayers…

What a good gardner and a kind man. You guys were quite the couple. A dynamic duo as it were. Your sadness is felt even way over here in Rutherfordton. My prayers are with you and your family.

Herman was a fine Christian brother who, with his lovely wife Lillian, were always giving, hospitable and loving in all aspects of living life. They were a team, always giving and reaching out to others. Their garden was shared with many. My family and I received bountifully from their garden over the years. They enjoyed making Christmas candy and crafts to share with others at that special time of year and they even blessed my grandchildren with birthday gifts like they were their own. The Messer’s are very dear and precious people. Herman will be greatly missed but he has left precious memories that will carry us through until that great day when Jesus will bring us all together again. Fred and Arthur Gibbs and Families
Pisgah Estates without Herman will not be the same. An avid gardener he was willing to help others who needed help for various reasons.
When we moved there years ago he was one of the first ones I met. Our sympathy to you, Lillian, on your loss. May the Good Lord be with you.
Our deepest sympathy to Lillian, Linda, Bob & family who I have known for many yrs. Herman was sweet, kind, considerate & one you could talk with. Our families lived as neighbors in W. Asheville & Crowell Rd & then at Pisgah Estates…I’ll treasure my memories of the times our families got together in our homes, out in the yards & vacation. Loosing my Dad recently, it’s hard but just cherish our memories & be thankful our parent was one to be proud of. Herman will be greatly missed & wishing Lillian & family strength & peace filled w/happy memories,love of friends & family.

I’m so sorry to hear of Herman’s passing. We were away from home and I wish we could have been there for you. May God bless you and your family. I will never forget all the fun times Linda and I had at the beach camping with Mr. and Mrs. Messer. Such a wonderful family. You are all in our prayers.
