Leonard E. Johnson

A native of Buncombe County, he was the son of the late Eugene and Hester Johnston Johnson. He was a 1926 Graduate of Lee H. Edwards High School and a US Army Veteran of WW II where he received a Purple Heart, two bronze stars and a silver star. Mr. Johnson was a retired employee of the City of Asheville with 40 years of service, most recently as superintendent of parking services. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church which he joined in 1936 and was a former Sunday School Teacher.
He is survived by his wife, Nina Sparrow Johnson; two sons and daughters-in-law, Alfred L. and Peggy Johnson of Niceville, FL, and Gene D. and Joan Johnson of Asheville; ten grandchildren, twenty-two great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m., Monday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home with Rev. Dr. Buddy Corbin officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hills Cemetery with grandchildren being pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Wiley Bumgardner, Bill Bell, Lawrence Burleson, Horace Roberson, George Perkins, and Howard Candler.
His family will receive friends 2 - 4:00 p.m. Sunday at 18 Mountain Terrace, Asheville.
Memorials may be made to Calvary Baptist Church Building Fund, 531 Haywood Rd., Asheville, NC 28806.
