Alan Carscaddon aged 84, died on Sunday, September 14, 2014.
Born on December 27, 1929 at home in Asheville, North Carolina, Alan, the son of Ovia Blackwell and Oliver Clyde Carscaddon, was the youngest of seven children, six boys and one girl.
Alan graduated from Lee Edwards High School at age 17 and then attended George Washington University in Washington, D.C. for two years.
Upon returning to Asheville, he married Penelope Reese and they just celebrated 64 years of marriage on August 30 this year.
Alan and Penelope had not been married long before he was called into the United States Army to active duty in Korea. He was a radio operator with the 13th signal company and was later assigned to the Heavy Mortar Company of the 5th Calvary Regiment. After an Honorable Discharge he returned to Asheville to resume his life with Penelope.
In 1952 Alan began working for Southern Bell Telephone and Telegraph Company as a cable splicer's helper in Morganton, and shortly thereafter was transferred back to his native Asheville, to continue working for Southern Bell for 34 years retiring as a Supervising Engineer for the company. Never really retired, Alan took a position as security coordinator for TSA at the Asheville Airport. He worked there for approximately seven years and made many friends while enjoying greeting people on their departures and arrivals.
Alan grew up in Haw Creek going to Morningside Baptist Church with his mother, but when he and Penelope, a lifelong Episcopalian met, and were later married at St. John's Episcopal Church in Haw Creek, he became an Episcopalian and was a very active member. Alan served on the Executive Committee of the Episcopal Diocese of WNC, and was appointed by Bishop Henry to conduct a diocesan stewardship training for clergy during that time. Alan was a licensed lay reader, chalice minister and a member of the choir at St. John's. He served as Senior Warden of the vestry both at St. John's and when he and Penelope attended Grace Episcopal Church in Asheville. Alan was also a board member of Brigadoon Homeowner's Association.
Alan is survived by his wife, Penelope and their children; Bruce Carscaddon, Dr. David Carscaddon, and Representative Susan Fisher and her husband John Fisher, Jr.
Also surviving are grandchildren; Megan Carscaddon, Katie Carscaddon and her partner Greg, and Lindsey Carscaddon, Jonathan Fisher and his wife, Yuco, Alexandra Fisher and her partner Ethan, and great grandchildren; Georgia Carscaddon and Oliver Fisher as well as many nieces and nephews.
The memorial will take place during the 11 a.m. Sunday, September 21 worship service at St. John's Episcopal Church, 290 Old Haw Creek Road, Asheville, NC 28805. The Very Reverend Ross Jones will officiate with the Rev. Robert Reese as celebrant. A reception will follow the service in the parish hall.
The family wishes to express its gratitude and admiration for the staff and administration of Pisgah Manor, Mission Hospitals Heart Tower, Memory Care of Asheville, Care Partners, Antoinetta and all who have shown such care and kindness to Alan and our family.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. John's Episcopal Church.
In a recent letter to his daughter, Alan wrote: "God is a symbol of something unfathomable, an utter mystery which fills me with joy each morning, and causes me to sing."
I am so sorry to have read of your loss. Please accept my sincere condolences. Something that I have personally found to be of great comfort is what the Bible says at John 5:28, 29 as well as Revelation 21:4. These verses show us that soon God is going to bring about a resurrection of our loved ones as well as do away with all causes we have for suffering including sickness and death. Knowing this has always comforted me and it is my sincere hope that these thoughts comfort your family as well. Again I am so sorry for your loss.

We have only known Alan via St. John’s for a few years. However, his firm handshake and warm smile conveyed a genuine friendship. We are grateful for having the privilege of knowing him.
