Alan Herbert Harris, 77, of 1111 Charlotte Highway, Fairview, died Tuesday, July 22, 2003, at Pardee Hospital. A native of Buncombe County, he was a son of the late Harold Chalmers and Mary Taylor Harris and was also preceded in death by his wife, Edith Owenby Harris, who died in 2000. He was an Army veteran of WWII and a Navy veteran of the Korean Conflict and was retired from the National Climactic Data Center where he worked as a computer programmer. Mr. Harris is survived by two daughters, Nancy Hefner and her husband Frank of Arden and Edith McMahan and her husband Bobby of Asheville; a son, Don Harris of Fairview; three sisters, Mary Cauble and Betty McGuinn of Asheville and Ann Buchanan of Jacksonville, FL; five grandchildren, Amy Crawford, Shannon McMahan and Matthew, Melissa and Mitchell Hefner; three great-grandchildren, Jacob and Cole Crawford and Trevor McMahan. Funeral services will be 2:00 pm Saturday at Emma’s Grove Baptist Church with the Reverend Donnie Chapman officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. His family will receive friends from 7:00-8:30 pm Friday at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue. Memorials may be made to Four Seasons Hospice, PO Box 2395, Hendersonville, NC 28793.

  3. I worked with Alan many years and he was a good friend and co-worker. I wish I was able to attend his service.

  4. I worked with Alan in the ADPSD from 1965 until he retired. I considered him both a colleague and friend. Current physical conditions prevent me from attending the visitation.

  8. I would just like for Alan’s family to know that I really thought a lot of him and he will be greatly missed. I went to Pulmonary Rehab with him.
