Albert Ray McCann, 62, of 254 Bent Creek Ranch Road, Asheville, died peacefully Thursday, April 11, 2002, in an Asheville hospital. Mr. McCann was born in Wilkes County and was a son of the late Thomas Coy and Eva Sparks McCann. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Iva Mae West and a brother, James (Ted)McCann. He was the owner of Biltmore Food Store. He was a former resident of Morristown, TN where he was retired from Lowes, Inc. He was a past vice-president of the Tennessee State JayCees and a former member of the Elks Club and the NC and Tennessee Homebuilders Associations. He was a former Transylvania County volunteer fireman. He attended White Plains Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife of 42 years, Billie Creasman McCann; one daughter, Michelle Smith and her husband Stuart; two sons, Michael McCann and his wife Dawn and Mitchell McCann and his wife Jennifer; two sisters, Cora Anthony of North Wilkesboro and Bernice Crabb of Roaring River; one brother, Thomas Coy McCann, Jr. of Winston-Salem; four grandchildren, D.D. Parker, Bucky McCann, Eric McCann and Miranda McCann and two great-grandchildren, Mikayla Parker and Piper Parker. Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm Sunday at Forest Lawn Memorial Park with the Rev. G.H. Shope officiating. His family will receive friends from 7 - 8:30 pm Saturday at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue and request that memorials be made to Mountain Area Hospice, PO Box 25338, Asheville, NC 28813, or to American Cancer Society, 120 Executive Park, Building One, Asheville, NC 28801. The family wishes to express their gratitude to Dr. Michael Messino, Judy Phillips, and other staff and also to the Oncology Unit of St. Joseph Hospital.
