      Alda C. Shroat of 38 Oak Park Road, Asheville, died Monday, February 15, 1999, at Margaret Pardee Hospital, Hendersonville.

Mrs. Shroat was born in Mars Hill and was a daughter of the late Thomas Clingman Carter and the late Ella Shelton Carter Carpenter.  She received her Business Degree from the Buncombe County Community College at the Buncombe County Courthouse.  She was a member of the Skyland Twirlers and of the Women’s Democratic Club and was a former Precinct Judge.  An avid Monogrammer, she was a member of the Monogramming Guild and her grandchildren, family and friends treasure her skill and monogrammed items that she left as part of her legacy.  She was a member of First Baptist Church.

Mrs. Shroat is survived by her husband, James J. Shroat;  two daughters and sons-in-law, Patty S. and Pete Webb of Columbia, SC and Donna S. and Eddie Lane of Lexington, NC;  six grandchildren, Parker Shroat Webb, Carter Bentley Webb, and his wife Leigh, and Wendi Kay Webb, all of Columbia, Penny Lane Henry and her husband Keith of Maryville, TN, Charla Patricia Lane of Wilmington, and James Charles Lane of Lexington;  a great-granddaughter, Sarah Lane Henry of Maryville;  and  a brother, Clyde Carter of Shelby.

A memorial service will be at 4:30 pm Wednesday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home with the Rev. Gail Coulter officiating.

Her family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home and request that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Margaret Pardee Hospital Oncology Nursing Unit, 715 Fleming Street, Hendersonville, NC 28791.
