Alice Mabel Runnion "Penny" Albin, 83, of 181 Courtland Place, Asheville, passed away Wednesday, November 19, 2008, at the John F. Keever, Jr., Hospice Solace Center. Mrs. Albin was born September 27, 1925, in Detroit, MI, and was a daughter of former Marshall residents, the late Maury M. and Hattie Howell Runnion. She returned to Marshall in 1960 with her husband and five children. She was married to Albert Earl Albin, who died in 1977, and was also preceded in death by a son, Maury Charles Conway. In 1963 the Albin family moved to Asheville where Alice worked as a bookkeeper at Bennett and Felmet Texaco Station, where her husband, Albert, also worked. Later, in 1977, after Albert passed away, Alice started a new job at Minit Man Auto Wash on Patton Avenue. She worked as a cashier and did accounting for owner Jud Delaney. Alice worked there until her retirement in the late 1980's. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. Mrs. Albin is survived by her brother, Maury F. Runnion of Lafayette, IN; son, Thomas L. and wife, Linda, of Charlotte, their daughter, Monica L. Wackerhagen and grandchildren Cooper L. Wackerhagen and Zoe Page Wackerhagen, all of Charlotte; son, Arthur E. Albin and wife, Bonnie, of Leicester; daughter, Dawn A. Garris and husband, Johnny, of Trinidad, TX, their daughter, Dawn D. Whalen, and grandchildren Kayla D. Whalen and Morgan G. Whalen, all of Lexington, KY; their son Daniel L. Dettweiler of Waynesboro, VA, and son Dennis L. Dettweiler and wife, Dana, and their children, Dennis L. Dettweiler II and Drew L. Detteiler, all of Asheville; son Merritt E. Albin of Swannanoa and his daughter, Samantha Albin of Middlesboro, KY, and grandson Albert Charles Conway of Florida (son of the late Maury Charles Conway).; six step-children, eight step-grandchildren and 13 step great-grandchildren, all of Hammond and Munster, IN. The funeral will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home with the Rev. Donald N. Welborn officiating. Interment will be at Green Hills Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Maury Runnion, Dennis Dettweiler, Charlie Crane, Shawn McCullom, Bob Walsh, Joey Guffey and Scott Mulju. Her family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7:00 t0 8:30 p.m. Friday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Carepartners Hospice, PO Box 25338, Asheville, NC 28813, or to Calvary Baptist Church, 531 Haywood Road, Asheville, NC 28806
