Born in: Asheville, NC
Resided in: Asheville, NC

Alma Elizabeth Ertzberger Ledford, 87, went home to be with the Lord on August 20, 2024.

A native of West Asheville, she lived most all of her life within 1/2 mile of Haywood Rd. Alma was born on May 20, 1937, and was a graduate of Lee H. Edwards High School. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

She loved nothing more than seeing others succeed and find happiness. She had a keen fashion sense and exuded elegance and grace in every aspect of her life. She loved cats and all animals, doing the daily crossword puzzle, playing Jeopardy, reading, shopping, French-tip nails, traveling, beautiful things, getting together with her “crowd” and having everybody over for dinner. She attended West Asheville Baptist Church for many years. Most of all she loved her family—as a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt, grandmother and great-grandmother, she treasured times when the whole family got together, and she was an endless source of encouragement and support. She was a woman of her word who maintained a grateful spirit. She lived an honest and transparent life always holding her heart and hand open for the poor and sick.

Alma was the wife of the late G. Brookshire Ledford, the daughter of the late John Harmon and Mary Griffin Ertzberger and the sister of the late Ray and James Ertzberger.

Alma is survived by her daughter, Angie Cannady and husband, Brett of Asheville; granddaughter, Lindsay Cannady Stewart and husband Peter, of Charlotte, NC; grandson, Phillip Cannady and wife Emily of Arden, NC; and four great-grandchildren.

The graveside service will be held at Green Hills Cemetery, 25 New Leicester Highway, Asheville, NC 28806 on Friday, August 23, 2024, at 3:00 p.m. Pastor Leah Brown will officiate.

In place of flowers, the family respectfully suggests memorial donations be given in memory of Alma E. Ledford to ABCCM, 1845 Brevard Rd., Arden, NC 28704.

Groce Funeral Home on Patton Ave. is assisting the family.

  1. Angie and Brett
Prayers for you and your family in these
sad days in the loss of a loved one!!
    Rev. Ron Brown

  2. What a sweet soul. Angie, both of your parents were great folks. I know each of you will mourn your mom’s passing, but you will rejoice in her being present with our Lord and again seeing your dad. Celebrate this part of her life and look forward to your eventual reuniting in a better place. Vicki and I will have each of you in our prayers!

  3. Angie, your mother was everything you described in her obituary. She was always so thoughtful and had a gentle demeanor. She was a beauty but remained humble. She was a prayer warrior and a saint.
I am thinking of you and praying for your family during this time of loss. We have that assurance of seeing our loved ones again gathered around the throne of grace praising the Lord.

  4. Angie and family I’m so sorry to hear of your mother’s passing. She was a sweet lady that always had a smile and sweet word to those she met. All of our parents are having a wonderful reunion in heaven. Love and prayers. Cheryl Bland
