January 28, 1949 ~ March 4, 2023

Born in: Wilmington, NC
Resided in: Fletcher, NC

Alton Larry Connor Sr. 74, a resident of Henderson County, went home to be with our Lord, Saturday evening March 4, 2023, surrounded by his family. Visitation will be held Wednesday March 8th at 10am at Hoopers Creek Baptist Church with funeral following at 11am. Interment with Military Honors will follow at the old Hoopers Creek Cemetery. Officiating the service will be Pastor Phillip Youngblood and Preacher Eddie Youngblood, Pastor Bryan Henn and Doctor Samuel Lewis ministering.

Alton was born January 28, 1949 in Wilmington N.C. to the late Porter and Elouise Connor. Alton served his country as a medic in the 3rd Squadron of the 2nd Armoured Cavalry Regiment in the US Army in Germany guarding the Czech Borders and was honorably discharged as E5 in 1971. Their motto “Toujours Pret” meaning “Always Ready” expresses the spirit of the regiment and was how he lived his life. Alton lived the life that we needed to always “be ready” whether in faith or in survival and he raised his family as such.

Alton was a member of Hoopers Creek Baptist Church. He served in his church faithfully many years as church custodian and as grounds keeper until his health declined. Alton, known as “Pappysboy” by his hunting buddies/cb handle, loved God, hunting, his family and “his extended kids.” He was an electrician and known by all as a “Jack of all Trades.” He tried to help others where he could and always stood for his family, beliefs and his faith.

Alton was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter at birth, his son, Alton Larry Connor Jr., and his twin brother Dalton Connor. Alton is survived by his wife Louise Connor of 30 years; sister Sharon Peek (Jimmy), brother Charles Connor (Mary), son Scott Connor (Brynn); daughters Tonia (Dusty) Walker, and Tricia (Samuel) Lewis: along with grandkids: Skylar, MaKenzie & Hunter Connor, Tristan Connor, Devin & Presley Walker, and Elijah Lewis.

Groce Funeral Home’s Lake Julian team is assisting the family.

Guestbook

  1. Louise, Sharon, and family,
Oh my heart is broken. We love Alton and his family and enjoyed camping with them for the past 25 years. Alton was always ready to help anytime we needed something ‘fixed’ on the camper. David loved to share hunting stories with him. He will be missed but always remembered! We are sending our sincere condolences, prayers and hugs to the entire family. May God grant you comfort and peace.

  2. I am so sorry to hear about Alton. He, Dalton, and Pappy Connor were hunting buddies when we were younger.

  3. Louise, Sharon, and the entire Connor family we are so sorry to hear of the passing of Big Al. We loved him dearly and will treasure all the camping memories forever. That’s how I remember him. We love you all and are praying for peace and comfort during this time of grief.

  4. I enjoyed some of the best days of my life growing up hunting with My Dad, Uncle Al, Chris,Scotty and lil Al. Uncle Al always kept his sons in the woods hunting and enjoying the outdoors. He was always shooting a big Buck or spinning that ole black chevy around in the highway chasing dogs. He was very loved by everyone that knew him. My Prayers are with his Family and He is in a better place now.
