Alva “Gus” Garrigus, 97, formerly of West Asheville, passed away Saturday, April 10, 2021.

Mr. Garrigus was born September 9, 1923, in Park Co., Indiana to the late Homer and Xena Loy Garrigus. He was married for 62 years to Marjorie Rose Underwood Garrigus who died in 2013.

Gus served our country in the Pacific Theatre, US Army, during WW II. Following his service in the Army, he worked with the VA hospital system in Michigan, Colorado, Indiana, and Florida. He retired from the VA and moved to Asheville where he worked with Grove Stone and Sand, Western Carolina Tractor, and spent 15 years with the Red Cross in blood services.

He was a member of Groce United Methodist Church.

He was a member of the Masonic Grand Lodge of Indiana. He was active with the local chapters of the American Legion, DAV, and NARFE. He loved making his jams to give to others, and loved following motorsports, especially IndyCar and NASCAR.

He is survived by his son, David L. Garrigus and his wife, Nancy; his sister, Martha Rennick, and his brother, Marion Garrigus, both of Indiana.

Graveside services will be held at Green Hills Cemetery in Asheville, NC on Friday, April 23, at 11:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Red Cross.
