Alvin Lothrop Luttrell, 87, of 517 Crowfields Lane, Asheville, NC, died Friday, January 25, 2002, after a brief hospitalization. Born in Washington, DC on March 30, 1914, he was a son of the late Nathaniel Horace and Harriet Lothrop Luttrell. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Elizabeth Wall Luttrell and by his brother, Nathaniel Luttrell. Mr. Luttrell was a graduate of Sidwell Friends School and was a member of the graduating class of 1936 at Princeton University. He received a Masters of Business Administration Degree from Harvard business School in 1938. Mr. Luttrell had a successful career as an executive and Chairman of the Board of Woodward and Lothrop, a Washington, DC based chain of retail stores co-founded by his grandfather, Alvin Mason Lothrop. Following his retirement, Mr. Luttrell moved to Palm Beach, FL and after spending many summers in the area, he became a full time resident of Asheville, NC. He was actively involved in numerous civic and charitable organizations and was a Director of the Katharine Pollard Maddux Memorial Mental Health Foundation of Washington, DC. He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, the Sons of the American Revolution and The Mayflower Society. Mr. Luttrell is survived by his daughter, Betty Luttrell Wilson and her husband Arthur of Palm City, FL; two granddaughters, Nancy Crabtree and her husband Pete of Knoxville, TN and Elizabeth Phillips and her husband Brian of Charlotte, NC; a grandson, A. Lothrop Morris and his wife Donna of Palm Beach, FL; a sister, Nancy Luttrell Orme and her husband Edgar J. Orme, Jr. of Leesburg, VA; four great-grandchildren; a niece and two nephews. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm Friday, February 1, 2002, at Trinity Episcopal Church in Asheville, NC, with the Revs. Gary Farmer and Tom Hughes officiating. A memorial service will be planned in Washington, DC at a later date. Memorial gifts may be sent to the American Heart Association, 7272 Greenville Avenue, Dallas, TX 75231.
