Resided in: Asheville, NC

Ann Weir Sizemore passed peacefully on September 23, 2018 after a brief period at the John F. Keever, Jr. Solace Center. She was born October 19, 1938 in Asheville. Ann was a lifelong and much-beloved educator. She taught scores of South Asheville youth at Valley Springs and Estes Elementary. Even after retirement, she returned to Estes where she pulled a red, Radio-Flyer wagon full of books from room to room to read to children. Her legacy is found throughout the community with the generations of children she taught to read, write and in whom she instilled the love of learning. Ann grew up in the Roberson community and was proud to have lived, loved and taught where she was raised. In addition to teaching, Ann introduced many Roberson District school students to square dancing, a mountain tradition Ann learned from her parents and passed down to many generations. Her square dance teams competed throughout Western North Carolina and in State competitions where they won countless awards; more importantly for her, they learned and carried on a mountain-folk heritage of art, fun and togetherness. Among Ann’s many amazing qualities was her ability to recognize a student who she had taught some 25 or more years ago. A caring and energetic soul, she befriended everyone she met; and, she was fortunate to both love and be loved by so many people whose lives she touched. She was a life-long and active member of Skyland United Methodist Church. She enjoyed working with youth groups; and, for many years she, her husband and other church members took Church youth on camping trips to Myrtle Beach. In more recent years, she worked with other church members in serving food to other church members and the community. Many of the members of her Sunday school class have been together for 40+ years having developed deep bonds of friendship. Ann is the daughter of the late Hal and Martha Weir. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Ed; her sister, Carol Peterson and brother-in-law, Bruce; son, Steven and daughter-in-law, Jill; and, grandchildren Hannah, Meredith and Marshall. Ann’s family thanks the care providers and Ann’s friends at Arbor Terrace for their wonderful care, support and friendship. In addition, the family thanks the providers at the Keever Solace Center for their kind assistance to Ann, her family and friends. A memorial service will be held at Skyland United Methodist Church on Sunday, September 30 at 2:00 p.m. A reception will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Ann Sizemore Scholarship Fund, c/o Buncombe Co. Schools Foundation, 175 Bingham Road, Asheville NC 28806. This scholarship will benefit aspiring elementary education teachers. Alternatively, please consider donating an elementary age book to the Ann W. Sizemore Library at Estes Elementary; these donations can be brought to the memorial service or to Estes Elementary, 275 Overlook Road, Asheville.

  12. I don’t know where to begin. I have known Mrs Sizemore my entire life. I first saw her over 55 years ago when she taught at the old Valley Springs School. I was the caller on our Valley Springs square dance team beginning around 1967. I remember when Steven was born, I was dancing on the team then. She was always so good to me, my entire life. She never gave up on me. After I retired I’d see her at the store and we’d talk like we’d just seen each other. It makes my heart hurt that I won’t see her again. To her family, please accept our most sincere condolences. We will miss her so. I am a very lucky person to have known her.

  15. The true definition of ‘teacher’ . I have always loved seeing her through the years. She taught at Estes when I was a little girl in the early 80s and was still volunteering there when my little girl was there a few years ago. She will truly be missed by the entire Roberson community. RIP Sweet Lady ♡

  16. Even after 30 years she still remembered me the last time I saw her at Ingles. Only truly special people can make such last marks on children’s hearts. Mrs Sizemore was so invested in her students. I feel so blessed to have been one who learned from her. She had a way of building confidence in a child. She would not stand for any type of negativity or bullying. What an amazing legacy she has left behind. God bless all who loved her.

  17. Countless people have been positively affected by Mrs.Sizemore both through education, her church and civic service. But I had the privilege of knowing her as almost a second mom. Steven and I grew up as best friends and I was fortunate to have spent a great deal of my childhood growing around her and her family. Whether it was pilling into that big Country Squire station wagon to head off to Myrtle Beach, Outer Banks or Gatlinburg I was always invited along. Some of my best memories are going to Football and basketball games with her Steven and Ed at T.C. and hearing Ms Ann cheer on the Rams just like she was
back at Valley Springs where she was a cheerleader.Or giving Pee Wee Jones a hard time for running the same play. But the best thing I remember about Mrs. Sizemore was I always felt safe, welcome and just a part of their family. She was quick with a laugh and all about fun but ready to set me or Steven on or ears when needed. Thank you Mrs. Sizemore for enriching my life and forgive me if I miss spelled anything here. My prayers for the family of this truly wonderful lady.
