Barbara McElrath Warren, 84, passed away peacefully Saturday, November 28, 2015, at Flesher's Fairview Healthcare. Born August 21, 1931, in Waynesville, NC, to Nettie Compton McElrath and William Earl McElrath, Sr., she remained a lifelong resident of WNC.
Barbara graduated from Lee H. Edwards High School in 1950. She pursued a nursing career, graduating from Baptist Hospital School of Nursing and Wake Forest University, after which she received advanced certification in nursing from East Carolina University. After nursing for a time in Hickory, she nursed eight years at Memorial Mission Hospital in Asheville and retired in 1990 after a long and distinguished career at the VA Medical Center in Asheville.
Barbara was predeceased by her parents, a brother, Edward L. McElrath, and a sister, Ann McElrath Casey. Left to cherish her memory are her loving husband of forty-two years, Robert L. Warren, her brothers William E. McElrath, Jr. (Linda) and Howard R. McElrath (Betty), her sister Judith McElrath Hobson (partner, Rennette Dufour), and several nieces and nephews. Barbara was a generous and giving person who will be missed by all who knew her.
Groce Funeral Home in Asheville will assist with a graveside celebration of life for the family, at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Eliada Home.

Aunt Barbara always sent me $5 on my birthday every year- she never forgot! She always had a sweet smile and had a gentle kind spirit.
I was going through some thing and found Barbara’s address . I had been a classmate back in the 1940 ‘s . I just wondered if she was still with us. It has been years since we had corresponded . I enjoyed her friendship when we were young but the distance and time was a barrier .
