Barbara Ramsey Walker, 85, formerly of Asheville, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 14, 2019, after a brief illness. Barbara was the daughter of Grace S. Gilbert and William Gilbert, both of Asheville, NC. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert Moore Walker. She graduated from Lee Edwards High School in Asheville where she was a majorette. Barbara resided most of her life in Raleigh, where she retired from the NC Department of Public Instruction as an administrative assistant. She was an avid reader and later in life loved a good game of cards with her friends at Magnolia Glen retirement community. She also loved the beach and spent many summers at the NC Crystal Coast. She is survived by her daughter, Christine Walker Harrell (husband, Ronnie) of Raleigh; her son Michael David Walker (wife, Renee´) of Newnan, Georgia; her six grandchildren, Kevin Harrell of Charlotte, (wife, Holly), Katie Ostendorf of Raleigh, (husband, Kyle), Cameron Harrell of Charlotte, (wife, Katy), Christopher Walker of Atlanta, Andrew Walker of Peachtree City, Georgia (wife, Mehwish), and Brenton Walker of Newnan, Georgia. Barbara will also be fondly remembered by her five great grandchildren, Holden Harrell, Carter Harrell, and Brooks Harrell of Charlotte, Brooklyn Ostendorf of Raleigh, and Mila Walker of Peachtree City, Georgia. The graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, January 18th at The Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain, NC. The family will receive friends on Thursday, January 17th from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Groce Funeral Home, 856 Tunnel Road, Asheville, NC. A memorial service will follow at Magnolia Glen retirement community in Raleigh at a later date. Flowers may be sent to Magnolia Glen Retirement Community, 5301 Creedmoor Road, Raleigh, NC 27612. In lieu of flowers, those desiring to make a memorial contribution are encouraged to consider: Rex Healthcare Foundation 2500 Blue Ridge Road, Suite 325 Raleigh, NC 27607 in Barbara’s memory. Arrangements in Raleigh by Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, Saint Mary's Street and in Asheville by Groce Funeral Home, Tunnel Road.

Christine, you won;t remember me but I went to high school with your mom and we were good friends years ago, I still have a picture of you when you were born in Germany but I would have to dig through thousands of pics to find it, I even visited your mom and Dad in Raleigh years ago as our youngest son Jeff lives there for years, unfortunately we did not get to visit often but she was always such a good friend to me, I am truly sorry that she is gone now but please know I share in your sorrow, I live in Franklin, NC now near some of my other children as my husband Gus is in a nursing facility near here.
