Barbara Sue Birmingham, 66, of 53 Vanderbilt Terrace, Asheville, passed away Sunday, November 5, 2006, at her home with her loved ones at her side. Mrs. Birmingham was born October 29, 1940, in Buncombe County and was preceded in death by her father, Lawrence Wells, and her son, Carlos Birmingham, who passed away December 31, 2005. Barbara assisted her husband, Clarence Birmingham at Boozer Radiator for 22 years. All of her Black friends knew her as "Mrs. Boozer." She was a member of Bent Creek Baptist Church. Surviving are her husband, Clarence "Boozer" Birmingham; her mother, Hazel Brewer Wells; her daughter-in-law, Shannon Birmingham; brothers, Ted Wells and his wife, Linda, Guy Wells and his wife Joy; sister-in-laws Peggy Calhoun and her husband, Norman, Darlene Biggs and her husband, Sam, Elaine McPherson and her husband; brothers-in-law Richard Birmingham and his wife, Judy; nieces and nephews, Vicki Wells, James W. Wells, Kevin Calhoun, and R.B. Birmingham; and her uncle, G.E. Brewer and his wife, Lonzell. Graveside services will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday at Old Bon-a-Venture Cemetery, Clyde, with the Rev. Jerry Wilson officiating. Pallbearers will be Bruce James, Shane James, Roger Morgan, Keith McElrath, Chucky Case and James Honey. Her family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Wednesday at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue. Memorials may be made to Carepartners Hospice, PO Box 25338, Asheville, NC 28813.

  1. I was so sorry to hear the loss of Barbara. I didn’t know until today when I talked to Jamie. Vicky and Jamie have been friends of mine for almost 20 yrs.I knew what a great woman Barbara was and what a great man you are. May God be with you during this time. She will be missed by so many people. Just remember-we have a wonderful angel in Heaven watching us and keeping us safe!
