Born to Russian immigrant parents in the town of Jamaica on Long Island, New York on Christmas Day, 1909, Beatrice Louise Levine Crandall passed to her rest on October 22, 2005. She received her early education in Philadelphia and graduated from Washington Missionary College in Washington D.C. Educated as a teacher, she served in many roles. Along with her husband Walter T. Crandall, she was a dormitory “parent” at La Sierra College in California (16 years) and wrote for the Riverside Press. After moving to Adelphi, Maryland she wrote the popular “Radarscope” column for her church’s weekly magazine, “The Youth’s Instructor” (18 years). Moving to Asheville in 1974, she was an active member of the Foster Seventh-day Adventist Church. In addition to her writing their monthly Community Services newsletter, she was instrumental in developing and managing the highly successful Community Services in her church, where large numbers of the homeless and disadvantaged came every Tuesday to receive food, clothing, and financial assistance. She loved preparing food for guests, classical music, reading and caring for her rose garden. But she is most remembered by how much she loved people - of all ages. She leaves behind her sister Grace L. Levine of Loma Linda, CA; two daughters, Carolyn Hope Bryan and her husband Bill of Asheville, NC and Barbara Joy Smith and her husband Douglas of Redlands, CA; 5 grandchildren - Alex and Nicole Bryan, David and Sarah Bryan, Brandon and Holly Bryan, Jason and Ruth Smith, and Jill Smith;two great-grandchildren - Ethan and Emma Bryan.
