Bernard Joseph Barrett, 94, went Home on Wednesday, March 3, 2021, after a brief illness.

Bernard was the son of the late Daniel J. Barrett and Lillian M. Lange. One of five children, Bernard was preceded in death by his brothers, Daniel J., Dennis J., Francis X., and Msgr. Gerald Barrett. He was also preceded by his wife, Virginia Lee Cady, and son, Patrick Jay Barrett.

Surviving Bernard are his sons, Christopher Lee Barrett, of Candler, and Paul Bernard Barrett, of Carrboro, NC; daughters, Darlene Elizabeth Barrett (Michael Sheldon), of Morganton, NC, Miriam Gay Barrett (Timothy Snow), of Alpharetta, GA, and Michelle Elise Barrett, of Concord, NC; grandson, Timothy Michael Sheldon (Sarah), of Candler; and several nieces and nephews.

Bernard served in the Naval Air Corp during World War II. He earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of Loyola in New Orleans, LA, a Master’s Degree in Chemistry from the University of Georgia and an Associate’s Degree in Electronics from AB-Tech, in Asheville, NC. Bernard was a retired research chemist from American Enka/BASF.

Bernard was an avid Duplicate Bridge Player and enjoyed family fishing vacations in Pass Christian, MS. Other hobbies included gardening with a special emphasis on Red Roses, wood working (building Adirondack chairs for his family and friends) and wine and beer making.

Bernard was a devout Catholic and a member of St. Joan of Arc Church for over 65 years.

The family wishes to extend their appreciation to John Martino, Bernard’s Faithful Friend, Hospice of the Carolina Foothills and to Rose Hill Retirement Community for providing Bernard with excellent care.

Memorials may be made to St. Joan of Arc Church, 768 Asbury Road, Candler, NC, 28715.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Private family services were held at Green Hills Cemetery.
