Beverly Jean Letterman Smith, 39, of 31 Maynard Road, Candler, died unexpectedly at her home on Tuesday, September 9, 2003. A native of Buncombe County, she was a daughter of Eva Sue Corn Payne of Asheville and the late James Jefferson Letterman. She worked at Heritage Hills Nursing Center. A loving wife, mother and grandmother, she is also survived by her husband, Jerry Marshall Smith; three sons, James Smith and his wife Amy, Jerry Smith and his wife Lesley, all of Candler, and Jonathan Smith of the home; six sisters, Brenda Johnson of Avery County, Laura Gross of Candler, Sheila Lunsford of Woodfin, Freda Thompson of Candler, Karen Caldwell of Arden and Debbie Caldwell of Asheville; two grandchildren, Cameron Smith and Emily Smith. Funeral services will be 2:00 pm Sunday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home with the Revs. Charles Sprinkle and Homer Moore officiating. Burial will follow at New Morgan Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. Her family will receive friends from 7:00-8:30 pm Saturday at the funeral home.
