August 13, 1941 ~ October 28, 2021

Born in: Asheville, NC
Resided in: Candler, NC

Bynum Sheldon Lance, 80, went to be with the Lord following a brief battle with cancer on Thursday, October 28, 2021.

Sheldon was born August 13, 1941, in Asheville to the late John Bynum Lance and Virginia Randall “Lucille” Lance. He was a 1959 graduate of Erwin High School and attended Asheville-Biltmore College. He was the co-owner and operator of Steel Graphics until his retirement at age 79.

He was a lifetime member of Zephyr Hills FW Baptist Church where he served as deacon and church treasurer. His love for the Lord never waivered. He lived for his family and helped countless other people with no expectation of recognition. He was the best husband, daddy, papa and brother and will be greatly missed.

He taught us how to live and he taught us how to die.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Peggy Roberts Lance; daughters, Kim Lance Hartless (Kevin) and Karena Lance McCoy (Jon); grandchildren, Savannah, Connor, and Carson Hartless, and Jake and Andrew McCoy; a sister, Theda Robinson, niece Taletha Clark and nephew, Jonathan Scruggs.

The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday at Zephyr Hills FW Baptist Church with the Rev. Daniel Cason officiating. Interment will follow at Green Hills Cemetery. The church service will be livestreamed on the Zephyr Hills Facebook page.

Pallbearers will be Kevin Hartless, Jon McCoy, Connor Hartless, Carson Hartless, Jake McCoy, Andrew McCoy and Jonathan Scruggs.

The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Zephyr Hills FW Baptist Church, 283 Shelburne Road, Asheville, NC 28806.

  12. So very sorry! Have been praying, but our Heavenly had other plans and needed him to be in Heaven with Him. I know he will be greatly missed by so many. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. Would have driven up for the funeral but had a prescheduled procedure appointment that could not be changed.

  13. You and your precious family have been in my prayers. I have fond memories of my childhood and Sheldon, Peggy, Kim, and Karena were a large part of those. Sheldon was a great example and very kind and loving. I pray that friends and family will be used to bring comfort and peace during this difficult time. Please know that I have lifted you all in prayer from Alpharetta Georgia and will continue to think of your family. Thank You Heavenly Father that we will all be together one day!

  14. Peggy, Kim and Karena –
Sheldon was truly a very special person and I will always remember the times spent around him during our college years and those wonderful weekends we would travel to spend at your home. Never have I ever felt so part of a family or loved than when I was in Asheville. He always welcomed us with open arms. I will forever cherish those memories from years ago. I love you all very much.
