Carl Edwin Peterson, 82, shared kind words and hugs with friends at his home on Thursday, October 6, 2016 and passed on with loved ones standing by his side. He was born December 28, 1933 in Madrid, Iowa, the son of the late Atle Leopold and Annetta Iley Peterson, and brother to Edward, William and the late Dorothy Swanson.
Carl was a true gentleman of great dignity and integrity, possessing loving patience and incessant generosity, and a gentle humor and understanding. He is loved and held in the hearts and minds of his wife of 42 years, LaDean; his children, Andrea, John and his wife Debbie, Tom, Steve, Bill and his wife Sarah, and Dan and his wife Amy, as well as two brothers, Bill and his wife Jane and Ed and his wife Jo Ann; thirteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Carl attended Drake University and Law School, graduating with his law degree in 1957. He spent his professional life as a lawyer and judge and raised his children in Marshalltown, Iowa, where he also served on the Chamber of Commerce as a member and president, as a church officer and Sunday school teacher at Hope United Methodist Church, as a member and past president of the Lions Club, and on the community school board. He then migrated to Asheville, NC with his wife after their retirement, where he continued to pursue many occupations old and new, including teaching law classes at AB Tech and South College, taking many courses and teaching law- and history-related courses at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI), serving as a member, officer, and president of the Men's Garden Club of Asheville, and serving on the board of the Reuter Center Singers. Carl had a passion for music throughout his life, playing organ and singing in his hometown church's choir, singing in choir at Hope United, singing and playing piano with the Reuter Center Singers, and singing with the Asheville Choral Society. Carl had a deep love for his children, family and friends, and took special effort to make plain his feelings and his joy in their accomplishments.

Carl never resorted to speaking loudly, but we always listened and heard what he had to say.
LaDean,
So good to see you and Carl at the Reuter Center Singers potluck! It brought back many fond memories of raising our voices in a joyful noise with those in the Chorus.
It’s a bittersweet time of year and I hope you surround yourself with family and friends to share the beauty and peace of the season.
