Hendersonville – Carl L. Slayton, Sr., 72, went to be with the Lord on Sunday,October 10, 2021, at Hendersonville Health and Rehabilitation. Carl is survived by the love of his life of 54 years, Dora Dean Thomas Slayton of Hendersonville. Carl is also survived by his three children; Carl L. Slayton Jr. and wife Racheal of Edneyville, Karen Slayton Benfield and husband Jerry of Horse Shoe and Kendra Slayton Green and husband Daniel of Leceister. He has four grandchildren; Katie Kay Slayton of Winchester, VA, Kelsey Marie Slayton of Winchester, VA, Carlee Benfield Hopkin and husband Russell of Fletcher, Siri Ava Green of Leceister and three great grandchildren. He is also survived by four brothers; Johnnie Justus Slayton of Cape Charles, VA, Lewis Edward Slayton of Lanexa, VA, Linwood Porter Slayton of Lanexa, Va, and Glen Ray Slayton of Williamsburg, VA. Carl is preceded in death by his parents, Ruby Jane George Slayton and Linwood Justus Slayton.

Carl was a loving husband and devoted father and grandfather. Carl and Dee were inseparable from the moment they met as teenagers and their representation of the bond of marriage was an inspiration to us all. He could often be seen teaching his children and grandchildren about the simple things in life such as canning vegetables, the different types of trees and wood, or how to fish. He was a very active member in his church and sang for the congregation almost every Sunday.

He was a very gifted wood worker and a well-respected leader for such industries as Hampton Hardwood Corporation, Boise Cascade, Merillat, and Broyhill. He retired from Broyhill in Hickory, NC in 1996.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian (72 Long Shoals Road Arden, NC 28704) on Sunday, October 24, 2021 at 2:00 PM. A private Graveside Service for immediate family only will follow.

  1. It was a privilege to call Carl L. Slayton Sr. my Poppop. I know he is investigating every single corner in Heaven. Love you and miss him so much but am thankful I have an angel in heaven watching over me always.

  2. My Father N Law, There is so much I can say! He was A GODLY man. He absolutely loves the Lord. He was a fearless in every aspect,even in his sickest times. He was a Wonderful husband,friend to my mother n law! A Wonderful Father and best friend to his son and his daughters! He will be greatly missed. He is now at the feet of Jesus! Worshipping out Savior,singing Glory Glory Glory God Almighty!

  3. I have known Carl and his family for many years. I will always remember him from family visits with Karen, Lee and Carlee. He told us how to grow the best tomatoes, how to can green beans, and showed us what an amazing Dad and Grandfather he was. My heart goes out to my dear friend Karen and her family as they deal with this great loss. DeeDee will be lost without him but I know she has many amazing memories to comfort her. Prayers for the Slayton family.
