A native of Greeneville, TN, he was the son of the late William Marion Fender and Mary Jane Fender. He was also preceded in death by an infant son, William Edwin Fender, a brother, Oscar W. Fender, and three sisters, Pearl McCurry, Virginia Boulanger, and Ruth Angel. He was a lifelong Mason.
Surviving are his wife of 68 years, Nell Ledford Fender; a son, John C. Fender and his wife Karen; two daughters, Wanda Smith and her husband William E., and Shirley Thompson and her husband William Jay; two sisters, Lillian Bundy and Leona Raines and her husband John; nine grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm Sunday at Freedom Baptist Church where he was a member and deacon for many years. The Rev. Rusty Rector will officiate with burial to follow at Pisgah View Memorial Park.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
His family will receive friends from 7 - 8:30 pm Saturday at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue.

We will miss him. He was an inspiration to all of my family at Freedom Baptist Church.I will see him again someday for I know where he is.
Carl was a shining example of our Lord Jesus Christ and will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
