Arden- Carleen Elizabeth Gillespie Maney, 85, of Arden, went to be with her Lord on Monday, January 18, 2016 at the Memorial Campus of Mission Hospitals.
A native of Buncombe County, she was a daughter of the late Carl and Christine Hawkins Gillespie. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Richard Lewis Maney, who died in 2008.
Carleen enjoyed her crewel pictures and doted on her cockatoo, Carly.
She is survived by her daughter, Brenda M. Harris of Arden; two sisters, Saundra Patterson of Mills River and Joan Lanning of Hendersonville; one grandson, Daren B. Williams of Arden; one great-grandson, Daren B. Williams, Jr. as well as a niece, Deborah Morgan of Mills River.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, January 26, 2016 at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain. The family will receive friends from 12:30 PM – 1:30 PM on Tuesday, January 26, 2016 at Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian.

I am so sorry to hear of Carleen’s passing. Carleen was my best friend after I was first married, and she taught me so many things! She and your father Richard were some of the most important people in my life. I have many happy memories with your family, and some I would like to share with you all. Richard and I had both been radiomen in the Navy, and his accomplishments amazed me. I have since done some more research on both the families. Both he and your mother had a fascinating lineage. Please remember to keep us posted on how you all are doing. I am sorry that I found out so late.
