Arden - Catherine Hughes Dahs, 96, of 129 Colony Drive, went to be with the Lord, Saturday, January 4, 2003 at The Oaks at Sweeten Creek, a rehabilitation and care center. She loved the mountains, a resident since March 1983, after relocating from New Jersey. Mrs. Dahs came from England in 1926. After her arrival in New York, she worked for the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company for 10 years. She married William Martin Dahs, June 19, 1931, who preceded her in death in 1979. The family lived on farms in New York and New Jersey, the longest stay being in Tuckerton, NJ. Beginning in 1953, they had an egg business and ran an egg route in town and surrounding communities. Daughter of the late Patrick Hughes and Mary Ann McCooey Hughes of Liverpool, England, she was the first of five children and her four sisters, Mary (Mollie) Kirchhoff, Anne Bray, Eileen Atherton and Margaret (Peggy) Bardin, preceded her in death. Mrs. Dahs is survived by her daughters, Kathleen D. Denton, and husband James, of Fletcher, Patricia A. Dahs of San Francisco, Calif., and Margaret D. Wongweerachon of Falls Church, Virginia. Grandmother of eight, she also had ten great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm Thursday at Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian on Long Shoals Road with the Rev. Ken Crabb of Arden Presbyterian Church officiating. Her family will receive friends following the service. Donations may be made to the New Hope Presbyterian Church’s Program for the Council on Aging, 3070 Sweeten Creek Road, Asheville, NC 28803.
