Arden- Cathy Peterson, 74, died unexpectedly on Monday September 9, 2024 while vacationing with her husband in Montana.

Born in Raliegh, NC, May 12, 1950, Cathy grew up in the Durham area and Alliance, Ohio where she graduated from Alliance High School in 1967. She then attended Ohio Wesleyan University receiving her Bachelors Degree and Ohio State University receiving a Masters in Social Work in 1973.

Cathy worked for over 40 years in four different states in the field of Social Work with families, children, and adolescents as well as adult addictions. She retired from the State of NC in 2016 with over 30 years of varied experience.

Cathy enjoyed traveling to numerous countries with her husband, reading, movies, concerts, and all types of musicals and plays. She really appreciated the friendships she made and maintained from High School, College and those she called friends from the Asheville area.

She is survived by her loving husband, Edward Peterson and talented son, Eric Peterson. She is also survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Drs. Brian and Kitty Sales of Lenoir City, TN; her sister-in-law Audrey Cirino of Uniontown OH as well three nephews, one niece and their families and numerous cousins. Cathy was preceded in death by her parents Dr. R. H. “Chick” Sales and Elenore Cutlip Sales.

A private family service celebrating Cathy’s life will be held at a later date.

For those who desire, contributions may be made in Cathy’s memory to either the World Wildlife Fund, PBS-NC or the Nature Conservatory.

  1. My deepest sympathy to you both, Ed and Eric. Cathy was a light and a force for good in this world. She lived her life with grace, kindness and humor. I will miss her immensely.

  2. She was a wonderful lady and sister in law. She was the sister I never had. Will miss her so very much. A kind and caring person is what I will always remember.

  3. I met Cathy when she started working at ADATC, she eventually became my supervisor and then a treasured friend. She was my chosen sister. Cathy was a kind and loving person who cared for so many souls during her lifetime. She had a great sense of humor and we shared so many wonderful times together. I will miss her so very much. Ed and Eric I am so very sorry for your loss.

Extraordinarily talented, funny, wise, and with a humility that made everyone comfortable in her presence. She also had spark when she needed to show it. And everyone listened. We traveled together as Directors and she was so fun. We were never short on laughs. Loved her dearly.

  6. I am so sad to hear this news. I loved Cathy. She was a wonderful supervisor when I worked at Blue Ridge Center. So calm and caring and patient, trying to keep us all in line. She was the best supervisor I ever had. Such a loving human being. I am so sorry for your loss Ed and Eric. She sure loved you both.

  7. I was so sorry upon hearing about the death of Cathy. She was a sweet caring soul. She loved working with the youth. I knew her from Blue Ridge Center and the Juvenile Evaluation Center. My condolences to Ed and Eric. Definitely in my thoughts and prayers! 🙏🙏

  8. I first met Cathy at ADATC where I would send my department reports to her. We became friends and I had spoken with her in the Spring. I learned of her passing from another employee at ADATC at Thanksgiving dinner. My thoughts and prayers are with Ed and Eric. She will be missed by all who knew her
