Charles Cameron Herold, 83, of 47 Hillcreek Road, Asheville, died Tuesday, June 19, 2001, at his home.

Mr. Herold was born November 27, 1917, in Washington, DC, and grew up in Kansas City, MO. With a Midwest philosophy “make things work the way they’re designed to work”, he set out at the age of five with a violin and bow to prove this statement, successfully retiring at age twenty from the Kansas City Philharmonic Orchestra. Continuing to employ this concept he became a lightweight boxing champion and enjoyed success skating, playing tennis and golf.

After hearing a civilian pilot training commercial on the radio, Cameron’s curiosity and interest in flying was aroused. Signing up for the program while in college he received his private license. He completed his flight training in the regular Navy, stationed at Pensacola, FL, as an Aviation Cadet.

Later he began his career as a pilot with Panagra (Pan American Grace Airways). At first he was based in Lima, Peru and flew mainly to the U.S. west coast, the Pacific, and South America, and also participated in the Korean Airlift.

After eleven years in Peru he transferred to Miami, FL. Nearly a scratch golfer, Cameron returned to tennis in Miami and was a member of the Royal Palm Tennis Club and served on its Board of Directors for many years, including President in 1974.

He retired from Braniff International Airlines in 1977 with 35 years of flying, logging over 27,000 hours and over eight million miles. He moved to Burnsville, NC in 1979 with his wife, Mary, where they lived until moving to Asheville in 1990 where they operated a successful business.

Surviving are his wife, Mary C. Herold; three daughters, Janet Michael Haines of Birmingham, Judith Grifith of Asheville and Patricia Williams of Davie, FL; two sons, Eric Cameron Herold of Charlotte and Robert Stephen Herold of Asheville; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 am Saturday at the Basilica of St. Lawrence, D.M., by Fr. Frank Reese.

Interment will be at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery.

His family will receive friends from 7 - 8:30 pm Friday at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 120 Executive Park, Building 1, Asheville, NC 28801.
