Charles Edward Beaver, Jr., 86, of 9 Red Oak Road, Asheville, died Tuesday, May 4, 1999 at Solace, the Mountain Area Hospice Facility, after a period of declining health.

Mr. Beaver was born in Asheville May 1, 1913,  to Charles and Lydia Buchanan Beaver, the second of seven children.  He served in the 100th Infantry
Division of the Army during WW II, receiving the Bronze Star, and retired from the Army Reserve in Asheville with the rank of Colonel.  Following his military service, he returned to Wake Forest College where he earned a BS Degree in Chemistry,
graduating summa cum laude in 1948.

Mr. Beaver was an employee of American Enka Corporation for 46 years, serving as the manager of the Rayon Chemistry Lab and as Labor Relations
Manager for both the Rayon and Nylon Plants before his retirement in 1976.  Mr. Beaver was a life Deacon of First Baptist Church in Asheville, where he served in many capacities during his 71 years of membership.  He was also an active member
of the Asheville Kiwanis Club and served as resident of the Board of Directors of Green Hills Cemetery.

is survived by his wife of 56 years, Katherine Rankin Beaver;  two daughters and their husbands, Scott Beaver Hill and Dr. Richard Hill, and Dr. Patricia Beaver and Robert A. White;  four grandchildren, Katherine Hill Starks and
husband John, Christopher Charles Hill and wife Anne, Kate White and Susannah White;  and two great-grandchildren, Geoffrey and Meredith Starks.  Also surviving are sisters, Maxine Teague and Juanita Dixon of Asheville and Betty Pugh of Boynton Beach, FL and  brothers, Ralph Beaver of Wilkesboro and Harry Beaver of High Point and many nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by a brother, Fred Beaver.

A memorial service will be at 2:00 pm Thursday at First Baptist Church. Private burial will be at Green Hills Cemetery.

His family will receive friends at the church on Thursday immediately following the service.
