Charles Elmer Johnson, 83, of Candler, died on Sunday, September 10, 2017, at the CarePartners Solace Center. A native of Franklin and a resident of Candler, NC, for the last 50 years, Charles was a son of the late Homer and Grace Moore Johnson. He was also preceded in death by his siblings, Helen Parker and Howard Johnson. Mr. Johnson proudly served his country in the U.S. Army, stationed in Germany. He soon after began a career with Southern Bell/ Bell South/ AT&T where he rose through the ranks to retire as a supervisor after many years of service. He suffered a major stroke in 1993, but made a miraculous recovery to go on to take many trips with his loving wife and friends. He has a collection of over 400 ball caps commemorating the many places they visited. He loved many sports but was an avid Nascar fan. He loved and supported his family through thick and thin and had just celebrated his 50th wedding anniversary this past June. He touched many lives and will be missed by many. This world has lost a very strong man. He is survived by his wife, Lucille McClure Johnson; daughter, Marissa Johnson Burton and husband Charles Michael Burton; grandchildren, Brittany Leigh Burton and Timothy Charles Burton; sisters, Beatrice Johnson and Mary Crawford; and many beautiful nieces and nephews. The memorial service for Mr. Johnson will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 16, at the Patton Ave. chapel of Groce Funeral Home with Pastor Roy Rigdon, of Edgewood Baptist Church, officiating. Military honors will be performed by the North Carolina Honor Guard. His family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.   1. I am so sorry to hear of Elmer’s passing ,He grew up in our church and we attended school with him and his sisters .what a wonderful brother he was ! Bea I know you will miss him so ,Love and prayers for the family

  4. I was saddened when I heard of Elmer’s passing. He was a great guy and a wonderful personal friend. I’ll always remember the trips Fran and I took with Elmer and Lucy and the rest of ‘the gang’.
