Charles Franklin Fletcher

October 5, 1931 ~ March 25, 2017
Resided in:
Candler, NC
Charles Franklin Fletcher of Candler, N.C. The sawmill man. The myth. The legend. One of Charles's favorite sayings was "It's my way or the highway!" and he meant it. He always brought home the bacon.
Charles, aka "Sonny" had a life-long love affair with Tennessee Walking horses, bananas foster, filet mignon, Wild Turkey 101 and the mountains of Western North Carolina. He had a love of sawmills and this was evident in the hundreds of homes that he built. He was strong, proud, and beyond stubborn but was generous to a fault and tender-hearted.
He despised laziness and said "If you are going to do something, do it right the first time or don't bother to do it at all!" He valued education above all.
Charles passed in peace on Saturday, March 25, 2017 at the age of 85. Army veteran. Brother of Mary Nell Beaver. Uncle of Phil Beaver and Sheila Boyer. Former husband of Jane Fletcher. Loving father of Carla Fletcher Lee, Charles Alan Fletcher, and John Steven Fletcher. Father-in-law of Tony Lee and Susan Fletcher. Proud grandfather of Diana Coohill, Hunter Coohill, Isabella Lee, Charles Lee, Hudson Lee, Justin Fletcher, Jackson Fletcher, Regan Fletcher, and Steven Fletcher.
He always said, "It'll do until we can do better!"
Charles lived life to the fullest and if he had any regrets he would never admit it.
The family will receive visitors at Groce Funeral Home, 1401 Patton Ave. Asheville, NC on Wednesday, March 29 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A memorial service will follow at 7:00 p.m.

I saw a significant spiritual change in Charles over a year ago, when I visited him at Crystal Ridge. I believe Charles turned to Jesus Christ; and he told me he wanted to go to heaven. I look forward to spending ‘eternity’ with Charles.
I pray each of you will accept Jesus Christ, become a ‘born again Christian’, and enjoy a magnificent life. May God our Father fill you with His holy Spirt.
Dear Mary Nell and family,
My condolences to you and your family. I remember meeting Charles when your mother was at Aston Park HCC many years ago. Take care. My thoughts are with you.
One of the smartest men I have ever known. I have spent countless hours working with or around Sonny. No matter what you wanted to talk about, he could fill you in on the details. A very educated conversation to say the least, from the Bible, to politics, to sawmilling. He could always hold my attention no matter what the subject. Strictly matter of fact, no nonsense! To the point. I take pride in knowing that I have shook his hand many times over the years, and can call him a true friend!! RIP! Sonny
John and Alan, I am so sorry for the loss of your father. What a nice video tribute. Please know that I’m thinking of your families during the hard days ahead.
Our deepest condolences on your families loss.
Sincerely, Bill and Alvin Hutchison

Mary Nell and family, so sorry to hear of Sonny’s passing.
Haven’t seen him in years but have fun memories of visits
with him and Jane years ago!
Dear family. We are so sorry about charles. And that we were unable to come to the service. Bob had just got home from the nursing home and been in the hospital four times. Bob and charles were good friends. We also cared for the family very much and the kids enjoyed the years of dancing. And other activities very much. Sending our love to each of you.
