Charles Mitchell Plemmons, 70, of 231 Piney Knob Road, Leicester, died Saturday, December 6, 2003, at Hospice Solace Center. Known to many as “Charlie” or “Pop”, he lived in Leicester all of his life and was a son of the late Howard Grady and Jessie Lee Treadway Plemmons. A graduate of Leicester High School, he was a US Navy Veteran. He was retired from Memorial Mission Hospital where he worked in the Engineering Department and had previously worked with J. Hilliard Ward Construction Company. An active lifelong member of Turkey Creek Baptist Church, he was also a member of the French Broad Masonic Lodge #292 AF & AM where he was a 32nd degree Mason, a member of the Scottish Rite and of the VFW Post #891. Pop was happiest when outdoors, working on his farm or spending time with his family and friends. Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Loretta Plemmons; children, Linda Freeman and her husband Phillip, Freda Plemmons, Travis Plemmons and his wife Monica, all of Leicester; granddaughters, Whitney and Cortney Freeman; a sister, Louise Sorrells and her husband Jack of Asheville. Funeral services will be 7:00 pm Sunday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home with the Revs. GE Freeman and Joe R. Babb officiating. His family will receive friends following the service until 9:00 pm. Graveside services will be 11:00 am Monday at Snelson Cemetery with Masonic Rites conducted by the French Broad Masonic Lodge #292. Memorials may be made to the Snelson Cemetery Fund, c/o David Hawkins, 133 Snelson Cemetery Road, Leicester, NC 28748 or Leicester Volunteer Fire Department, 2852 New Leicester Hwy, Leicester, NC 28748. Mr. Plemmons family would like to thank all the medical staff who participated in his care and his many friends and neighbors for their kindness and support during his illness.
