Charles R. "Curly" Whitaker, 84, of 480 Rose Hill Rd., Asheville, went home to be with Jesus on Monday evening, April 6, 2009. A native of Buncombe Co., Mr. Whitaker was a son of the late Morris D. and Anna Mae Fair Whitaker. Mr. Whitaker was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in WWII, and was a member of the Reynolds Baptist Church family. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Beatrice "Becky" Whitaker; daughter, Charlene Fowler, of Marion; son, Dale Whitaker and wife Patty, of Asheville; grandchildren, Melinda Carrabis and husband Pat, and Ronnie Whitaker, all of Orlando, FL; and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service for Mr. Whitaker will be at 7:00 p.m. Friday at Reynolds Baptist Church with the Rev. Bobby Smith officiating. His family will receive friends following the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Reynolds Baptist Church General Fund, 520 Rose Hill Rd., Asheville, NC 28803.

  6. Charlene, So sorry for your loss. I’ve been where you are and know the hurt. But we have the assurance that God will give us His grace to see us thru. I still remember when I used to go home with you from school and we ate those wonderful ‘chipped ham’ sandwiches. Fond memories. My prayers are with you and your family.

You may not know me, but I was raised at Gashes Creek and remember Becky, Curley, and some of the older kids when I was young. My son Tim also married Rebecca Robinson.     i am so sorry to read of charles’s death. i was out of town for a while and just saw his obituarie. i enjoyed knowing him and working with him for so many years at the va. my prayers are with you and your family.
