Clara Christine Smathers Lance, 68, of 48
Lance Road, Candler, died Sunday, Nov. 8, 1998
at her residence.

A native of Haywood County, she was the
daughter of the late Clarence P. and Bonnie
Moser Smathers and wife of the late James Jay
Lance, Jr., who died in 1996.  She was also
preceded in death by a son, Charles Ernest
Lance.  She was a retired employee of the
Pisgah Fish Camp.

She is survived by six daughters, Barbara
Lance of Asheville, Susan West of Candler,
Becky Rice of Candler, Rosemary Tolley of
Hickory, Allison Lunsford of Candler, Nancy
Lance of Asheville; a son, James J. Lance, III of
Candler; sister, Thelma Hawkins of Canton;
brother, Earl Smathers of Farmington, New
Mexico and 8 grandchildren.

Services will be 11 am Tuesday in White Rock
Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. R.H.
Lance.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.  
The family will receive friends from 10 until 11
am Tuesday at the church.
