Fletcher - Claude A. Lance, 81, of Fanning Bridge Road, died Saturday, January 15, 2000. A lifelong resident of Henderson County, he was a son of the late Hall Marshall Lance and Effie Ashworth Lance. He was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church where he served as a sub deacon. He was an Army veteran of WW II, serving from 1942 until 1945 in North Africa, Italy, France and Germany. Mr. Lance was a dairy farmer and retired from the Westfedt Farms as farm manager with 30 years service. He is survived by his wife of 52 1/2 years, Ida Bryson Lance; sister, Coline Lance of Arden; two nephews, David Lance of Arden, Hall Grayson Lance and his wife, Sally, of Mills River; a niece, Gladys Lance and her husband, Ray Carter, of Biltmore Forest; a great-nephew, Kevin Lance and his wife, Penny, of Mills River and a great-great-nephew, Christopher Lance. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Raymond, Gilbert and Hal Lance. Services will be held at 2 pm Tuesday in the chapel of Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian conducted by the Revs. Walter Taylor and Roy Rector. Burial will follow in Shepherd Memorial Park with military graveside rites conducted by the Hendersonville VFW Post #5206, American Legion Post #77 and the DAV Chapter #14. The family will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 PM Monday at the funeral home on Long Shoals Road. Memorials may be made to Emmanuel Baptist Church, c/o Sharon Chambers, 160-A N.
