Asheville ~ Clyde Ray Thompson, 88, of 7 Stockwood Drive, died Wednesday, November 3, 2004 at Flescher’s Fairview Health Care Center. A native of Haywood County, Mr. Thompson was the son of the late William Vance and Ella Mae Taylor Thompson. He was preceded in death by his wife Myrtle Pauline Huntley Thompson, a son, Ronald Ray Thompson, and a grandson, James Marc Thompson. He is survived by two daughters, Janet Hughes of Mars Hill, Pat Gosnell of Asheville, and one son, James Thomas Thompson of Arden,; six grandchildren, Angela Baker, Michael Ownbey, Grant Thompson, Jeffrey Hughes, Robbie Thompson and Paul Thompson; one great grandson, Devon Tyler Ownbey; two nieces, Cathryn Nanney and Cornelia Todd. He was retired from Halliburton, and Sayles Bleachery. Mr. Thompson was a WWII veteran, serving in the European theater, and received two purple hearts and a bronze star. He was a member of the Sweeten Creek Baptist Church. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday in the chapel of Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian on Long Shoals Road with the Rev. Jim Stroupe his pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Gashes Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service. Memorials may be made to the Good Samaritan Baptist Missions, and mailed to 33 Smokemont Drive, Arden, N.C. 28704.
