Curtis Eugene Britt, Sr., 83, of Candler, died on Thursday, May 26, 2011 at Asheville Healthcare. A native of Haywood Co., Mr. Britt was a son of the late Clarence Claude and Minnie Etta Farmer Britt. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Jonathan J. Holt. Mr. Britt worked with Champion International for 33 years. He was a Mason, a member of the Lion's Club, a member of the VFW as a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII, and an active member of the Upper Hominy VFD Auxiliary. Additionally, he was an active member of White Rock Baptist Church, where he sang and played piano. He enjoyed playing gospel music for all his life. Mr. Britt is survived by his wife Geraldine Smathers Britt; daughter, Jane Britt Holt, of Candler; son, Curtis Eugene Britt, Jr., of the home; and brother, William S. Britt and wife Gloria, of Fairfield, CT. A funeral service for Mr. Britt will be on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at White Rock Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert Oliver officiating. Interment will follow in the church's cemetery. His family will receive friends for 30 minutes prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to White Rock Baptist Church, P.O. Box 1277, Candler, NC 28715. Groce Funeral Home on Patton Ave. is assisting the family.

  5. Where do I even start? There are so many memories – from the times of Gene, Bob, Paul, Wilbur Dean and Daddy practicing and singing all those years, to our trip to Florida, and I could go on and on. I can already hear them singing together again. You all have a special place in my heart and are in my thoughts and prayers. It’s tough giving them up, but we can rest assured that we will see them again one day – SOON! Even though we didn’t see him much in the last few years,he will definitely be missed!We think of you all often.

  9. Mr.Britt,was my Sunday School Teacher at Hominy Baptist Church,when I was a kid. Mr. Britt was a big inspiration to me by helping me to know Christ early in my life.We would talk when we would see each other at Champion . One of my most memorable times was when Mr.Britt took his Sunday School Class to Enka Lake. Mr. Britt was a good Christian Man and he will be missed .

  11. Mrs. Britt and family: Will miss seeing you and Mr. Britt at Harbor Inn after church on Sundays. He was always so friendly and smiling. Know my husband’s Dad – Guy and my Dad – Calvin – enjoyed being in the VFW with him. Also my grandparents – James Jay and Lexie Lance and my aunt and uncle – Billie and Gedwin Morgan – thought a lot of you all and going to church together.     There are no words that can express the love and wonderful memories that I have for you and Gene. You know that I thought the sun rose and sat in Papaw Britt. I know today he is the happiest man in heaven to have his son there with him. I know that you will miss him greatly. Oh but how beautiful the music is in heaven today for the choir has a wonderful new angel.

  19. I am so sorry to hear of Gene’s passing. I have thought of and missed you both often and I am sorry I did not know sooner. Yvonne told me just a couple of weeks ago. He was a wonderful man and I loved his smile. I know Gene is in heaven adding his gift to the beautiful music there and someday we can all sing together again.
